Happy Mother’s Day to our Mothers

Happy Mother’s Day to Truth’s mother (Marie Elizabeth Potier)

Cowichan Lake

And Gary’s Mother (Heleen Budnyk)

A Tribute to Grandmothers everywhere:

As every grandmother knows, it’s a different role than being a mother or a daughter.

Grandmothers are able to adore their grandchildren, and to smile as their children go through the same struggles they went through when they were young.

Grandmothers have lived through three seasons of motherhood, and have seen the beauty in each.

Cherish your mothers. The ones who wiped your tears, who were at every ball game or ballet recital. The ones who believed in you, even when nobody else did, even when maybe you didn’t believe in yourself.

Women wear many hats in their lives. Daughter, sister, student, breadwinner. But no matter where they are or what they are doing, one hat that mothers never take off is that of motherhood.

A Letter from a Mother to a Daughter

“My dear girl, the day you see I’m getting old, I ask you to please be patient, but most of all, try to understand what I’m going through.

If when we talk, I repeat the same thing a thousand times, don’t interrupt to say: “You said the same thing a minute ago”… Just listen, please. Try to remember the times when you were little and I would read the same story night after night until you would fall asleep.

When I don’t want to take a bath, don’t be mad and don’t embarrass me. Remember when I had to run after you making excuses and trying to get you to take a shower when you were just a girl?

When you see how ignorant I am when it comes to new technology, give me the time to learn and don’t look at me that way… remember, honey, I patiently taught you how to do many things like eating appropriately, getting dressed, combing your hair and dealing with life’s issues every day… the day you see I’m getting old, I ask you to please be patient, but most of all, try to understand what I’m going through.

If I occasionaly lose track of what we’re talking about, give me the time to remember, and if I can’t, don’t be nervous, impatient or arrogant. Just know in your heart that the most important thing for me is to be with you.

And when my old, tired legs don’t let me move as quickly as before, give me your hand the same way that I offered mine to you when you first walked.

When those days come, don’t feel sad… just be with me, and understand me while I get to the end of my life with love. I’ll cherish and thank you for the gift of time and joy we shared.

With a big smile and the huge love I’ve always had for you, I just want to say, I love you… my darling daughter. “

Happy Mother’s Day to my Daughter

Happy mothers day my beautiful daughter
Your children are gorgeous and happy. They are also very young.
Do your best to be a good mom.
Enjoy the good times and never falter.
Because they will grow up one day and have questions.
Where’s my grandma? Why didn’t I see her?
Why did you not think to invite her?
She sent us cards every birthday and holiday, wishing us love and happy times.
But You never said anything, you didn’t smile.
What could she have done that made you this way ?
You told us she made mistakes.
So will we.
Will you not talk to us or smile then?
She must have been a good mom because you are one to us.
What  Happened with grandma?
Where is she?

Raspberries in Season

When raspberries are in season and at a great price, consider buying a large amount. Wash them with water and a couple of drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract, air dry on wire racks, then freeze them on parchment paper lined cookie sheets.

Dry Raspberries

Freeze on Cookie Sheet

When frozen separately you can easily pack them in Ziploc plastic bags and they do not stick together. Use as many as you need for desserts, breakfast cereal and other uses.

Hope this helps and when buying in bulk, you save money and this gives you a fresh tasting raspberry treat for the future.

Bon Appetite

Earth Day April 22, 2012

We attended the Earth Day and Wild Foods Festival 2012 at the Nanaimo Bowen Center.

There were a number of vendors and community groups in attendance.  Here is a list of some of them.

Cowichan Pasta        Riso        Salish Sea Salts       Nanaimo Foodshare

Morningstar Herbals      Metchosin Farms

Nanaimo Sausage House – 3018 Ross Road, Nanaimo, BC V9T 3Z1 – 250-751-0555

We then went to find a garage sale or flee market to spend some time out and about and the weather was really nice.   In our traveling around, we found the Nanaimo River Regional Park so we thought we should check it out.

Here are a few pictures as we stopped for lunch with only the sounds of the river and birds.

Smokin George’s

We were downtown in Nanaimo and saw a sign on the back of a bus advertising Smokin’ George’s BBQ Restaurant and decided to give it a try.  We realized it would not be organic but thought, what the heck, let’s do it.  We programmed our GPS and headed off to the restaurant.  Had a bit of difficulty finding it as we ended up driving by it the first time and crossed the highway heading out of town.  We turned around and finally found it.

The food was reasonable but you could tell it was not organic.   Here are a few pictures.

We found the meal sat heavy in our stomachs and had to walk after the heavy meal.  We are just not used to the spices and sauces that Smokin’ George’s uses on their dishes.

She said:  There was way too much food, so we had them wrap up what we didn’t touch and headed to downtown Nanaimo to give it to someone who had not eaten all day.   The recipient was most appreciative.

We will definitely find some organic restaurants for any future outings.
